Good readers know... there's nothing better than digging into a book to discover whether or not it's a good match for you! Check out our 5th grade readers...

What makes someone an authority or expert? Is Steve Spangler? How about Super Awesome Sylvia? Can an expert be only 13? Check out her vlog (video blog) at http://iaalibrary.weebly.com/science-fair.html. (You may remember her Squishy Circuits episode!)
YOU can be an expert, too! Think of a topic you want to know more about. Come check out our books in print and/or check out the ideas and resources on our science fair pathfinder. Want some help getting your project started? Join us on Tuesdays at lunch/recess (Code/Scratch Club time) for help planning your project. Here's some friends already at work... The energy and excitement here in the library lab is palpable, as first grade bloggers are beginning their own blogging sites, thanks to education.weebly.com. Each student has their own blog site to record their thinking about their reading work. They'll be using teacher, family and peer comments to help refine their thinking. Wahoo!
Maker spirit is very much a part of our school culture here at IAA.... as evidenced here by this impromptu Valentine-inspired origami work. We were using origami paper for a Bob Shea-Unicorn Thinks He's Pretty Great meets Ed Emberley thumbprint and marker style art project (Go Red Clover award nominees!) when a 3rd grader started teaching everyone at her table how to make these great origami hearts. As we were wrapping up at the end of the period, she volunteered to make an instructable/tutorial with a friend, so that other classes could make them, too. Makers rock! Love their willingness to share (and what a great procedural writing opportunity.) Students at IAA are taking on the Cantilever Bridge Design Challenge. A cantilever is a beam anchored at only one end. Cantilever bridges are bridges that are supported on only one side. Our challenge was inspired by this blog post on by STEM educator Brian Crosby. Our challenge: "Using only paint stirrers and 3/4" washers, build the longest cantilever span you can. You can use as many washers and stirrers as you want. Go" (Okay, even with $65 worth of washers, we ran out of materials for all of our engineers. Our solution was to allow our engineers to substitute World Book Encyclopedias for anchor weights, When we extend the challenge to the longest span with the most efficient amount of resources, students may exchange washers for an encyclopedia- approximately 27 washers per volume). One rule we have? Cheer when a design collapses- since we've learned something very important. We encourage students to "fail early, fail often" in order to promote exploration and "thinking outside of the box." |
