IAA "Makers" are invited to create during their breaks or free time. Ms Amy and I love to see kiddos inventing and making at our library explore stations!
No fooling, on April 1st IAA 5th graders will take part in their first Mystery Skype. Part geography lesson, part 20 questions, students are challenged to locate the location of our Mystery Skype partners. Here are some tips from experienced Mystery Skype students: http://pernillesripp.com/2013/05/13/great-mystery-skype-questions-to-get-you-started/

These are suggestions only! Depending on your answers you have to adapt your questions. We play in a yes/no format where students get to continue guessing until they get a no answer. Then it becomes the other teams turn. Things we do not recommend doing:

...I love IAA! Hanging out in the Principal's Office, waiting for after school pick up. Not great audio quality, but a good example of the everyday wonderful at the IAA!
Miss Jen's 1st Grade Smarties did a great job today in library. We shared the wordless picture book Zoom by Istvan Banyai, practicing using our Visual Thinking Strategies to read the illustrations. The book starts with this illustration: Our first graders had lots of great thoughts of what this might be: a crown with crenelations, a mountain, a dinosaur's spiky back, a monster foot... Then we turned the page and zoomed out to see... It's all a matter of perspective. After exploring Google Earth a bit, we ended with book shopping and enjoying this music video that takes a tour of our planet. The new DCF Award Master List has been announced... with some of my favorite new books on it. For readers who enjoyed Heir Apparent, you'll love The False Prince (and its sequel The Runaway King). Animal Lovers will eat up Chomp by Carl Hiassen and The One and Only Ivan. Some of you have already enjoyed Wonder by R. J. Palacio ("choose kind!"). I can't wait to share the new titles with you! Here's a link to the new list for those of you who want to get a head start: http://tinyurl.com/dcfaward I just finished another great read from the new list: The Expeditioners and the Treasure of Drowned Man’s Canyon. Isn't that a GREAT title? Take a look at its booktrailer... Who wants it next? No fooling.. we can learn a lot about a culture or community from the stories it tells. Our Very Merry Theater production of Once Upon Some Cinderellas...and a Motorcycle tells about our own school, IAA. It's an amazing opportunity to know the playwright so well, our own Miss Amy. I have so many questions to ask her: did reading Once Upon a Cool Motorcycle Dude inspire her Bedtime family's Motorcycle mania? Does she have a favorite version of Cinderella? What questions do YOU have for our author?
Here's a look at the "Magic" of theater at IAA... First graders have been learning about 2D and 3D geometric shapes. First, we explored some online tools to help us identify faces, edges, and vertices. Then we compared the work an illustrator does in two dimensions with the work an artist can do designing and creating in 3D. Lots of math thinking is evident as students predicted how much of each tool would be needed to construct their 3D cube. Look at the smiles of "sweet success"!
